Saint Thomas' Church is a Roman Catholic denomination situated in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, in the Northeastern corner of Campbell County. The Fort Thomas area was the site of an Indian battle in 1749 of the Cherokee tribe against the Shawnees and the Miamis. During the Civil War, the Fort Thomas area was part of the Cincinnati Defense Perimeter, a 12 mile stretch of twenty five installations protecting the Cincinnati area from attack. In 1887, General Sherman selected an 111 acre site to replace the Newport Post, a low lying area which was prone to flooding. He claimed the new "Highlands" area to be the "West Point of the West," and named the fort after Civil War General George Henry Thomas, a top Union General during the war. Originally the Fort Thomas area was named the District of the Highlands, with the name officially changing to Fort Thomas in 1914 after a vote by property owners. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: In January and February of 1937, weeks of heavy rainfall caused the Ohio River to flood parts of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky, causing $500 million in property damages, and displacing and killing hundreds. By the end of January, the Ohio River measured 80 feet deep in Cincinnati, one of the areas most affected. President Roosevelt dispatched thousands of relief workers from the Works Progress Administration to rescue flood victims and restore affected cities. This photograph shows the rising levels of the Ohio River encroaching on Ironton, Ohio, a city of 20,000 inhabitants. Ironton was the home of lucrative iron and cement plants, as well as lumber and mining interests. The photograph centers on the Lawrence County Courthouse, located at 111 South 4th Street. The Ironton-Russell Bridge, a cantilever bridge built in 1922, connects Campbell Avenue of Ironton to Etna Street on the Kentucky side of the river. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. Description: Four photographs depict the development of Shrum Mound. The first two show the mound before it was developed in 1929. The third shows it soon afterwards; the final depicts the mound in July 1963. The first three photographs measure 5" by 7" (12.7 by 17.8 cm) ; the fourth measures 8" by 10" (20.32 by 25.4 cm). Shrum Mound is one of the last remaining conical burial mounds in the city of Columbus. The 20-foot-high and 100-foot-diameter mound is located in the one-acre Campbell roadside park. The mound is grass-covered and steps lead to its summit. It was probably constructed about 2000 years ago by the prehistoric Adena people. The mound is named for the donors, the Shrum family. The park is named for James E. Campbell, governor of Ohio 1890-1892, and located approximately five miles northwest of downtown Columbus. The Adena Culture (500 B.C.- 200 A.D.), named for a mound found on the Chillicothe estate of Thomas Worthington, lived primarily in present-day Ohio and parts of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia. They built large effigy and burial mounds. The Adena were primarily hunter-gatherers, but began to grow squash and some weedy plants.
